From EZP Knowledge Base
Maintaining backups of your content is a very important part of running a website. You should keep regular backups, ideally finding a balance between having a copy of your data every time it changes while keeping in mind the time to download backup files, the space to store them, etc. A home directory backup in cPanel will backup all of the files in your home directory (neat how that works!). This is a useful feature, however please note!: it will not backup DNS, MySQL, or other system files and settings. If you are interested in a more robust backup solution that does involve backing up DNS, MySQL, system files and setttings please contact our sales department to inquire about our EZProtect Backup Service.
To perform a home directory backup, follow these steps:
- Login to cPanel!
- Click Backups (under the "Files" heading)
- Click Download a home directory backup
- Click save as
- Select a desstination for where you would like the back up to locally be saved to.
- Click Save
The backup will start downloading to the destination you have chosen. The backup file will be in a .tar.gz file which can be opened with any linux command line. Also, you can unzip this file from a windows based machine if you have the appropriate software. We recommend a software “winrar”. You can download a copy of it at: www.rarsoft.com
